History

The History of the Bulldog is a long and dark one. Throughout the centuries this unique dog has had many changes of appearance to suit its function over the years.

It began with the taller more athletic dog used to run down and catch bulls.

It then progressed to a dog that was lower to the ground with a shorter nose so that it could easily get under a tethered bull to clamp onto its nose, until the bull dropped from exhaustion in the ring.

It then was developed into the short, squat couch potato of today we all know and love, this truly remarkable breed has survived many changes.

 
 

The Bulldog has proved time and time again its intense loyalty to its master through a series of tortuous tests. These beautiful dogs want only to please and should never turn on their owners.

 
 

The Olde English Bulldogge Today

The Olde English Bulldogge is a fairly new and rare breed that is still being developed as a recreation of the Bulldog from the 1700's and 1800's.

Many feel the dog has been stripped of its dignity through the gradual mutilation of its appearance. Several breeders of the modern day Bulldog consider this mish-mash of breeds to be a glorified mongrel. The truth is that all breeds were created though the crossing of 'pure bred' dogs and only when stabilized do they become recognized as pure bred.

The Olde English Bulldogge is much healthier and longer lived than the English Bulldog. Virtually all major health problems have been eliminated. These dogs have fewer breathing and eye problems and greater tolerance of heat and cold. Larger litters are common and the dogs are naturally bred and whelped. Grooming needs are minimal.

The Olde English Bulldogge is still in the early stages of development. Its characteristics are open to interpretation and are largely the choice of the breeder.
